What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage primarily used to relieve tension in soft tissue and to treat injuries. Despite the name, it can be used in both sporting and non-sporting contexts. Whilst sports massages can benefit nearly everybody, treatment is especially important if you are training or participating in physical activity on a regular basis. Possible benefits of sports massage include:
- Reduced aches and pains as a result of reduced muscular tension and trigger points (knots).
- Reduced risk of injury by reducing specific areas of built up tension.
- Increased circulation and lymphatic flow, which can accelerate healing and recovery. This is because more oxygenated blood is directed towards the muscles. In addition, lactic acid and other detrimental metabolites are flushed out of the muscle.
- Reduced muscular fatigue and DOMS, again due to reasons stated in the above point.
- Correction of muscular imbalances which assists in improving posture.
- Increased mobility, range of movement and flexibility. This allows for better form during movements and reduces the risk of injury.
- Re-modelling of scar tissue and reduction in tissue adhesions, which increases the mobility of healing tissue.
Sports massage can also be used to help alleviate symptoms of conditions and injuries such as: fibromyalgia, sciatica, plantar fasciitis and tendonitis amongst many others.
What is Kinesiology Taping ?
In recent years this brightly coloured tape has become increasingly popular, particularly amongst athletes. It also also used widely by physiotherapist and in some health trusts it is also used to aid post-operative healing, due to its many beneficial qualities.
The tape can be applied to joints to increase stability, without compromising ROM due to it being highly elastic. The tape has a similar thickness and elasticity to that of human skin. These properties combined with the wave-like pattern of adhesive creates a decompression effect when the tape is applied to skin. This decompression effect is beneficial because when injury occurs, the body has an inflammatory response which causes swelling, pain, heat and reduced range of motion. By decompressing the tissue, swelling is reduced due to increased lymphatic drainage. Blood vessels are less contricted, improving blood circulation thus increased oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the injured tissue, accelerating the healing process. Pressure upon pain receptors is also reduced, relieving pain.

ABOUT LILY MEADOWS
A lifelong passion for sport and exercise, combined with a fascination for anatomy and physiology was the start of my journey into becoming a sports massage therapist. As a former sportswoman myself (ex- Tranmere Rovers Ladies goalkeeper), I understand the demands of physical activity upon the body.
In 2015 I graduated from Liverpool Hope University with BSc(Hons) Sport Studies. During which I studied various subject areas, which all contribute to a greater level of understanding I have as a sports massage therapist. Modules studied include: anatomy and physiology, sports science, nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning, coaching and sociology.
Following my degree course I then enrolled on to the Sports Massage courses that guided me to where I am today. I studied both Level 3 and Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy courses at Wirral Metropolitan College.
I have completed various CPD courses such as Kinesiology Taping and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM).
Over the years I have treated a diverse range of both non-sporting and sporting clients: athletes, dancers, gymnasts, bodybuilders, strongmen, rugby players, footballers, cyclists; the list is almost endless. Recently I have started working with the Tranmere Rovers first team on a weekly basis. I am constantly striving to further expand my knowledge, to enable me to provide an even better level of service to my clients.

Regular sports massage treatment can help you train and perform at your optimum level. However, don’t let the name fool you, whether you participate in sports or not, sports massage can benefit almost EVERYONE. Don’t let your muscular aches and pains develop into a more serious injury.
Kinesiology taping is a taping method which is becoming increasingly popular in sports and healthcare. It can be used for a variety of purposes such as: stabilising joints, improving posture, reducing swelling/bruising and accelerating the healing process of many injuries. Used alone or in conjunction with massage for optimal effects.
Have just had my 1st session of Kinesiology Taping with Lily and I am honestly amazed at the difference it has made straight away !!! I had a Total Hip Replacement as a result of a Road Traffic Accident just over 2 weeks so had lots of other pain, swelling and bruising all down the leg and I am astonished by the immediate results after this session and look forward to future sessions... Just had a superb sports massage from Lily, she was very professional. My legs now feel great after being barely able to walk after doing Tough Mudder at the weekend.
